Winter Vehicle Care: Essential Tips for Company Drivers

Posted on 11 Dec 2024

4 min read

Winter driving presents unique challenges, especially in the UK where temperatures and road conditions can rapidly change. Harsh weather conditions can take a toll on your vehicle and increase the risk of accidents. To keep you safe and your vehicle in top condition, follow these essential winter maintenance tips from Ogilvie Fleet:

Check Your Tyres Regularly

Tyres are your vehicle’s first line of defence against icy and wet roads.

  • Tread Depth: Ensure your tyre tread depth meets the legal minimum (1.6mm) or better yet, aim for at least 2mm during winter for optimal grip.
  • Pressure: Cold weather can reduce tyre pressure, so check and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
  • Winter Tyres: If your company operates in areas prone to heavy snow or ice, consider fitting winter tyres for improved traction.

Ogilvie Fleet’s tyre partner KwikFit can help with any winter tyre queries or speak to your own tyre provider directly.

Top Up Your Windscreen Wash

Visibility is critical in winter.

  • Use a screen wash with antifreeze properties to prevent it from freezing in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Regularly check your washer fluid level and keep spare screen wash in your vehicle.

Keep Your 12v Battery Charged

Cold weather can significantly impact battery performance.

  • If your vehicle is slow to start or your battery is over three years old, have it checked.
  • Minimize strain on the battery by turning off lights, heaters, and other electronics before starting the engine.

Maintain Your Lights

Shorter days and winter fog mean you’ll rely on your lights more.

  • Ensure all headlights, brake lights, and indicators are functioning correctly.
  • Keep them clean to maximize visibility for yourself and other drivers.

Monitor Engine Fluids

For internal combustion engines, keeping critical engine fluids topped up is vital at all times of the year but especially during the winter months.

  • Coolant/Antifreeze: Ensure your coolant is topped up and contains the right mix of antifreeze to prevent the engine from freezing.
  • Oil: Check your oil levels and ensure it’s at the appropriate level and grade for winter use.

Keep Your Vehicle Clean

Road salt can corrode metal parts of your vehicle so its important to wash your vehicle regularly, especially the undercarriage, to prevent rust.

Keeping all glass and lights clean will also help you see and be seen during the darker hours or bad weather.

Stock Up on Winter Essentials

It’s always better to be prepared. Keep the following items in your vehicle especially during longer trips or when adverse weather is forecast:

  • De-icer and an ice scraper
  • Warm clothes or a blanket
  • A torch with spare batteries
  • Emergency snacks and water
  • First aid kit

Plan Ahead

Before setting out, check the weather forecast and plan your journey.

  • Avoid unnecessary trips in severe conditions.
  • Allow extra time to reach your destination safely.
  • Familiarize yourself with alternative routes in case of road closures.

Drive Safely

Adjust your driving to suit winter conditions:

  • Reduce speed and increase following distance on wet, icy, or snowy roads.
  • Avoid harsh braking or acceleration.
  • Use gentle, steady movements on the steering wheel to maintain control.

Report Issues Promptly

If you notice any warning lights, unusual noises, or issues while driving, report them to your fleet manager or Ogilvie Fleet’s maintenance team immediately. Prompt action can prevent small problems from becoming costly repairs.

Making the most of your electric vehicle

During the colder periods, electric vehicles may take lose some charge when not in use and range may also be reduced. Remember to plan ahead, ensuring that you have enough charge overnight and that you have sufficient stops planned in for longer journeys.

Many vehicles have preconditioning features, allowing the car to be defrosted and the cabin to be at the desired temperature before you set off. If you do this whilst plugged in, you can use the energy from your charger rather than reducing the charge state of your vehicle.

By taking these steps, you not only ensure your safety but also help maintain your vehicle’s reliability and performance. Remember, a well-maintained vehicle is more efficient for you and your passengers.

Stay safe and happy driving this winter!
