Ashley’s Winter Tyre Blog pt3

Posted on:

This is my third instalment of my winter tyre blog and perhaps the most crucial so far. Since my last update my colleagues and I visited our Head office in Stirling for our Christmas party. The morning after the event I was shocked to see an inch of snow through my hotel window and a 300 mile journey home ahead of me.

Driving a BMW in the snow last year was almost embarrassing. An incline of any description rendered the vehicle almost useless, if not dangerous, when the standard tyres were fitted. Naturally I was apprehensive, the untreated, unused hotel car park would have previously been enough to stop my BMW in its tracks and leave me with no choice but to have an extended breakfast.

You probably don’t need me to tell you that Saturday afternoon saw the first of the snow for the majority of the country. Whilst the rest of the country looked out of their windows in dismay, I was more excited than many children as the time to test my 3 Series with winter tyres had arrived. Just about every news update on the weather showed a BMW spinning it’s rear wheels in the snow, I was determined to be the exception to this.

After family commitments….. sledging with my daughters…. I needed an excuse to get in the car so we decided to go out for a meal. Despite it being a short journey this would involve driving up the same snow covered hill that had prevented me from getting to work for the last three years. For years my (relatively) expensive BMW has been embarrassed by other cars when it comes to performance in the snow.

Originally I had planned to change my winter tyres back to summer tyres this week but as the photo shows it's a good job I didn’t.

Running winter tyres in summer conditions causes excessive wear but due to the recent weather warnings I cancelled my plans to swap my winter tyres back to the original set of all weather tyres just on the off chance of us actually getting the snow as predicted. I was really glad that I made that decision this morning, because when I woke up around 6:30am there was approx. 1-2 inches of snow that had settled all around my home in Sheffield.

Welcome to my final instalment of my winter tyre blog. As we are now (allegedly) in Summer I thought it time to take my Winter Tyres off and replace them with my standard tyres. Winter Tyres can be used all year round but in dry conditions tyre wear is increased. By swapping over the tyres I’ll be able to use the same set of tyres for next year as the tread depth is still well within the UK limit.

BMW 3 Series saloon production to end in October

Posted on:

Production of the current 3 Series Saloon will be ending in week 43 (17th-21st October). There is still some stock available but this will be handled by BMW on a first come first served basis. If you have any requirements for the 3 Series please contact your Area Manager as soon as possible as the replacement model isn't expected until the New Year. Details of the replacement model are yet to be officially announced but rumours suggest that the S, SE and M Sport names will be replaced by Sport Line, Modern Line and Luxury Line.

BMW after Brexit

Posted on:

We have received the following statement from BMW UK regarding Brexit.

"We are continuing to face political uncertainty regarding Brexit and are still waiting for much needed clarity on the direction of any final agreement and its implication for out business.

However, we feel it is important to let you know that the price of BMW and MINI vehicles imported into the UK will rise in the case of a no-deal Brexit, if WTO tariffs are applied.

BMW UK and MINI UK would like to provide assurance that any customer orders confirmed in BMW UK ordering systems by the close of business on the last working date prior to Exit date, currently 31 October 2019, or earlier if Parliament make a decision for a no-deal Brexit ahead of this date, will be protected from price rises that will result from a no-deal Brexit, subject to T&Cs.

Should there be a no-deal Brexit, BMW UK and MINI UK will provide details of any price changes for vehicles imported into the UK and corresponding price protection information as soon as possible following the UK's Exit from the EU."

The New BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo

Posted on:

BMW has added a new model to the BMW 3-series line-up. The new 3 series GT follows the same principle of the larger 5-series GT. It is longer, wider and taller than the 3-series Touring on which it is based. BMW claims the 3-series GT has the dynamics of the 3-series saloon with the practicality of the 3-series Touring and the looks of a coupé. The five-seat 3-series GT will be offered with five engines from launch, including a 302bhp 335i range-topper, and the likely best-seller, the 320d. It is set to go on sale in the UK in late spring, priced at around £1500 more than an equivalent 3-series Touring model.
